Random text chat

Text Chat With Strangers, No Camera Needed

One random person, one conversation, nothing but words. It is the way online chat with strangers started — and still the easiest way to say hello.

Omegle Started as Text Chat

When Omegle launched in 2009 there was no video at all — just a box, a stranger and the line “You’re now chatting with a random stranger. Say hi!”. The webcam mode arrived a year later, and plenty of people never stopped preferring the original.

Text took the pressure off. Nobody judged your room or your hair, you could think before you answered, and you could chat from places where talking out loud was not an option.

Omegle closed in 2023. OmeglePC keeps that one-to-one, random-stranger format in both modes — read the full story on our Omegle alternative page, or jump into video chat instead.

How a Random Text Chat Works

01
Tap Start Text Chat
On the next screen choose Text. The first time, a quick sign-in keeps the chat tied to you, not to an open tab.
02
Get one stranger
You are paired with a single random person. No group room, no audience, no list of usernames to scroll.
03
Type, or move on
Say hello. If the conversation is not going anywhere, end it and start a new match whenever you like.

First Lines That Get a Reply

In text, your first message is your whole first impression. “hi” gets “hi” back, and then someone skips. A question with a hook does better.

Try One Now
“Quick one: what time is it where you are?”
Easy to answer and gives you both a second topic straight away — where they are.
“I’m here because I can’t sleep. You?”
Honest, low stakes, and invites the same honesty back.
“Settle a debate for me — pineapple on pizza?”
A silly opinion question is the fastest way past “hi / hey / asl”.
“What’s something you were into this week?”
Open enough that a one-word answer feels rude, so people tend to give a real one.

Staying Safe When You Chat by Text

Text feels anonymous, which is exactly why it pays to keep a few habits. More in our safety guide.

Keep your handles to yourself
Phone numbers, social accounts and your full name do not belong in a chat with someone you met a minute ago.
Watch for links
A stranger sending a link in the first few messages is almost always selling something or worse. Do not open it.
Leave without explaining
You never owe anyone a reason. End the chat, and report it if someone crossed a line.

Text Chat Questions

New to OmeglePC? How it works covers the basics for both modes.

Is text chat on OmeglePC free?

It is free to start, and you get free messages to begin with. Longer conversations use coins — the same way video does.

Do I need a camera or microphone for text chat?

No. Text mode never turns on your camera or microphone. You only need them if you switch to video chat.

Is this the old Omegle text chat?

No. Omegle shut down in November 2023. OmeglePC is an independent service that keeps the same idea — one random stranger, one conversation — in text and video.

Can I switch from text to video?

Yes. Video chat lives on the same site; pick Video instead of Text when you start a new match.
